Origin Story

It was the early 90s & I was 11ish (yep, I'm old) when my older brother showed me an old, weathered copy of the Player's Handbook that he told me had been gifted to him. The next words out of his mouth were, "You want to play?"

So that night I struggled to put together my first character. I have no recollection of what I named him, but he was a grey elf, fighter class. I remember a few sessions very clearly. I was very emotionally attached to my character, which made it very, very hard to level up, as he would duck out at the first sign of danger. This was due to level 1 hp being scarily low & as a fighter, I was supposed to hurl myself at danger.... Yeah, that wasn't going to happen.

I don't believe I really got into the game with my first character. It was maybe a few months later that my brother had gathered a group of local BBS friends (because the earliest "internet" was the connection of privately owned & administered Bulletin Board Systems) this time, I have no recollection of what character I played, but this was the beginning of my obsession. When the group fell apart myself & the sysop (back in the BBS days the owner/operator of one was called a sysop = system operator) from the group continued to play our own game.

In the intervening years, I have only gone maybe a few uncomfortable months without playing. Almost every week I play at least twice, generally marathon sessions that run for nearly a whole day, each. So yeah, I live, eat & breath D&D, I have no other life.

I hope you have an excellent week filled with epic adventure!
